To Whom Did Jesus First Appear After Resurrection?

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the most important events in Christianity. According to the New Testament, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after His crucifixion. One of the most frequently asked questions is: “To whom did Jesus first appear?”

Mary Magdalene – The First Witness

According to the Gospel of John (John 20:11–18), Mary Magdalene was the first person to see the resurrected Jesus.

Key points about this appearance:

  • Mary Magdalene went early in the morning to Jesus’ tomb
  • She found the stone rolled away from the entrance
  • At first, she did not recognize Jesus
  • She thought He was the gardener
  • When Jesus called her by name, she recognized Him immediately
  • Jesus told her to go and inform the disciples

This moment is deeply significant because:

  • It shows Mary’s devotion and faithfulness
  • It highlights women as the first witnesses of the resurrection
  • It fulfills Jesus’ promise of rising again

Jesus Appears to Other Women

In the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 28:1–10), Jesus also appeared to other women who came to the tomb, including Mary the mother of James and Salome.

Their experience included:

  • Seeing an angel who announced Jesus had risen
  • Being told to inform the disciples
  • Meeting Jesus personally on their way
  • Worshiping Him and holding His feet

Jesus instructed them:

“Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

This reinforces the importance of their role as early messengers of the resurrection.

After appearing to the women, Jesus later appeared to His disciples multiple times.

First Appearance to Disciples (Without Thomas)

  • Jesus appeared in a locked room (John 20:19–23)
  • The disciples were afraid of persecution
  • Jesus greeted them with “Peace be with you”
  • He showed them His hands and side
  • The disciples were filled with joy

Appearance to Thomas

  • Thomas was not present during the first appearance
  • He doubted the resurrection
  • Jesus later appeared again and invited Thomas to touch His wounds
  • Thomas believed and declared: “My Lord and my God!”

Road to Emmaus Appearance

Another significant appearance was to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35).

  • Jesus walked with them, but they did not recognize Him at first
  • He explained the Scriptures about Himself
  • They recognized Him when He broke bread
  • Then He disappeared from their sight

This shows that Jesus’ resurrection body was real but also glorified.
