It cancels the sins of the<br \/>\npast life, serves as the principal means of<\/p>\n<p>keeping oneself from falling into sin again,<br \/>\nand of correcting one&#8217;s faults. Approach<br \/>\nthe sacrament regularly. It is wise counsel<br \/>\nto go ordinarily to the same confessor and<br \/>\nnot easily to change one&#8217;s confessor<br \/>\nwithout necessity. The conditions<br \/>\nnecessary for making a good confession<br \/>\nare: prayer, examen, sorrow, resolution,<br \/>\naccusation, and satisfaction. Sorrow<br \/>\ncoupled with resolution is indispensable<br \/>\nfor receiving pardon.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Prayer before Confession<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;O Lord, may I know myself; may I<br \/>\nknow you!&#8221; (St Augustine). May I know<br \/>\nmy own selfishness, ignorance, and<br \/>\nweakness, and know, too, that you are<br \/>\nready to lift me up and sustain me as I<br \/>\nclimb toward the spiritual heights you call<br \/>\nme to attain. May I distrust myself and<br \/>\ntrust in you!<br \/>\nEnlighten my mind, that I may see all<br \/>\nmy sins clearly soften my heart, that I<br \/>\nmay be truly sorry for them; give me the<\/p>\n<p>grace and courage to confess them<br \/>\nsincerely, and thus obtain your pardon,<br \/>\nthrough Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,<br \/>\nAmen.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Examination of Conscience<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Relations toward the Sacrament<br \/>\n1. What is my attitude to the sacrament of<br \/>\npenance? Do I sincerely want to be set<br \/>\nfree from sin, to turn again to God, to<br \/>\nbegin a new life, and to enter into a deeper<br \/>\nfriendship with God? Or do I look on it as<br \/>\na burden, to be undertaken as seldom as<br \/>\npossible?<br \/>\n2. Did I forget to mention, or deliberately<br \/>\nconceal, any grave sins in past confessions?<br \/>\n3. Did I perform the penance I was given?<br \/>\nDid I make reparation for any injury to<br \/>\nothers? Have I tried to put into practice<br \/>\nmy resolution to lead a better life in keeping<br \/>\nwith the Gospel?<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Relations toward God<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>1. Is my heart set on God, so that I really<br \/>\nlove him above all things and am faithful<br \/>\nto his commandments, as a son loves his<br \/>\nfather? Or am I more concerned about<br \/>\nthe things of this world? Have I a right<br \/>\nintention in what I do?<br \/>\n2. God spoke to us in his Son. Is my faith<br \/>\nin God firm and secure? Am I whole-<br \/>\nhearted in accepting the Church&#8217;s<br \/>\nteaching? Have I been careful to grow in<br \/>\nmy understanding of the faith, to hear<br \/>\nGod&#8217;s word, to listen to instructions on the<br \/>\nfaith, and to avoid dangers to the faith? Have I<br \/>\nbeen always strong and fearless in<br \/>\nprofessing my faith in God and the<br \/>\nChurch? Have I been willing to be known<br \/>\nas a Christian in private and public life?<br \/>\n3. Have I prayed morning and evening?<br \/>\nWhen I pray, do I really raise my mind and<br \/>\nheart to God, or is it a matter of words<br \/>\nonly? Do I offer God my difficulties, my<br \/>\njoys, and my sorrows? Do I turn to God in<br \/>\ntime of temptation?<\/p>\n<p>4. Have I love and reverence for God&#8217;s<br \/>\nname? Have I offended him in blasphemy<br \/>\nswearing falsely, or taking his name in<br \/>\nvain? Have I shown disrespect for the<br \/>\nBlessed Virgin Mary and the saints?<\/p>\n<p>5. Do I keep Sundays and days of S<br \/>\nobligation holy by taking a full part, with<br \/>\nattention and devotion, in the liturgy, and<br \/>\nespecially in the Mass? Have I fulfilled the<br \/>\nprecept of annual confession and of<br \/>\ncommunion during the Easter season?<br \/>\n6. Are there false gods that I worship by<br \/>\ngiving them greater attention and deeper<br \/>\ntrust than I give to God: money,<br \/>\nsuperstition, spiritism, or other occult<br \/>\npractices?<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Relations toward Others<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>1. Have I a genuine love for my<br \/>\nneighbours? Or do I use them for my own<br \/>\nends, or do to them what I would not want<br \/>\ndone to myself? Have I given grave scandal<br \/>\nby words or actions?<\/p>\n<p>2. In my family life, have I contributed to<br \/>\nthe well-being and happiness of the rest of<br \/>\nthe family by patience and genuine respect<br \/>\nand giving them help in their spiritual and<br \/>\nmaterial needs? Have I been careful to<br \/>\ngive a Christian upbringing to my children,<br \/>\nand to help them by a good example and<br \/>\nby exercising authority as a parent? Have<br \/>\nI have been faithful to my husband (wife) in my<br \/>\nheart and in my relations with others?<br \/>\n3. Do I share my possessions with the<br \/>\nless fortunate? Do I do my best to help the<br \/>\nvictims of oppression, misfortune, and<br \/>\npoverty? Or do I look down on my<br \/>\nneighbour, especially the poor, the sick,<br \/>\nthe elderly, strangers, and people of other<br \/>\nraces?<br \/>\n4. Does my life reflect the mission I<br \/>\nreceived in Confirmation? Do I share in<br \/>\nthe apostolic and charitable works of the<br \/>\nChurch and in the life of my parish? Have<br \/>\nI helped to meet the needs of the Church<br \/>\nand of the world and prayed for them: for<br \/>\nunity in the Church, for the spread of the<br \/>\nGospel among the nations, for peace and<br \/>\njustice, etc.?<\/p>\n<p>5. Am I concerned for the good and<br \/>\nprosperity of the human community in<br \/>\nwhich I live, or do I spend my life caring the<br \/>\nonly for myself? Do I share to the best of<br \/>\nmy ability in the work of promoting justice,<br \/>\nmorality, harmony, and love in human<br \/>\nrelations? Have I done my duty as a<br \/>\ncitizen? Have I paid my taxes?<br \/>\n6. In my work or profession, am I just,<br \/>\nhard-working, honest, serving society out<br \/>\nof love for others? Have I paid a fair wage<br \/>\nto my employees? Have I been faithful to<br \/>\nmy promises and contracts?<br \/>\n7. Have I obeyed legitimate authority and<br \/>\ngiven it due respect?<br \/>\n8. If I am in a position of responsibility or<br \/>\nauthority, do I use this for my own<br \/>\nadvantage or for the good of others, in a<br \/>\nspirit of service?<br \/>\n9. Have I been truthful and fair, or have l<br \/>\ninjured others by deceit, calumny,<br \/>\ndetraction, rash judgment, or violation of<br \/>\na secret?<br \/>\n10. Have I done violence to others by<br \/>\ndamage to life or limb, reputation, honour,<\/p>\n<p>or material possessions? Have I involved<br \/>\nthern in loss? Have I been responsible for<br \/>\nadvising an abortion or procuring one?<br \/>\nHave I kept up hatred for others? Am I<br \/>\nestranged from others through quarrels,<br \/>\nenmity, insults, anger? Have I been guilty<br \/>\nof refusing to testify to the innocence of<br \/>\nanother because of selfishness?<br \/>\n11. Have I stolen the property of others?<br \/>\nHave I desired it unjustly and inordinately?<br \/>\nHave I damaged it? Have I made restitution<br \/>\nof other people&#8217;s property and made good<br \/>\ntheir loss?<br \/>\n12. If I have been injured, have I been<br \/>\nready to make peace for the love of Christ<br \/>\nand to forgive, or do I harbour hatred and<br \/>\nthe desire for revenge?<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Relations toward Self<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>1. Where is my life really leading me? Is<br \/>\nthe hope of eternal life, my inspiration?<br \/>\nHave I tried to grow in the life of the Spirit<br \/>\nthrough prayer, reading the word of God<br \/>\nand meditating on it, receiving the<br \/>\nsacraments, self-denial? Have I been<\/p>\n<p>anxious to control vices, my bad<br \/>\ninclinations and passions, e.g. envy, love<br \/>\nof food and drink? Have I been proud and<br \/>\nboastful, thinking myself better in the sight<br \/>\nof God and despising others as less<br \/>\nimportant than myself? Have I imposed<br \/>\nmy own will on others, without respecting<br \/>\ntheir freedom and rights?<br \/>\n2. What use have I made of time, of health<br \/>\nand strength, of the gifts God has given<br \/>\nme to be used like the talents in the<br \/>\nGospel? Do I use them to become more<br \/>\nperfect every day? Or have I been lazy<br \/>\nand too much given to leisure?<\/p>\n<p>3. Have I been patient in accepting the<br \/>\nsorrows and disappointments of life? Have<br \/>\nI performed mortification to &#8220;fill up what<br \/>\nis wanting to the sufferings of Christ&#8221;?<br \/>\nHave I kept the precept of fasting and<br \/>\nabstinence?<br \/>\n4. Have I kept my senses and my whole<br \/>\nbody pure and chaste as a temple of the<br \/>\nHoly Spirit consecrated for resurrection<br \/>\nand glory, and as a sign of God&#8217;s faithful<br \/>\nlove for men and women, a sign that is<\/p>\n<p>seen most perfectly in the sacrament of<br \/>\nmatrimony? Have I dishonoured my body<br \/>\nby fornication, impurity, unworthy<br \/>\nconversation or thoughts, evil desires or<br \/>\nactions? Have I given in to sensuality?<br \/>\nHave I indulged in reading, conversation,<br \/>\nshows, and entertainments that offend<br \/>\nChristian and human decency? Have I<br \/>\nencouraged others to sin by my failure to<br \/>\nmaintain these standards? Have I been<br \/>\nfaithful to the moral law in my married<br \/>\nlife?<br \/>\n5. Have I gone against my conscience<br \/>\nout of fear or hypocrisy?<br \/>\n6. Have I always tried to act in the true<br \/>\nfreedom of the children of God according to<br \/>\nthe law of the Spirit, or am I the slave of<br \/>\nforces within me?<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Confession of Sins\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><em>In the confessional, humbly present<\/em><br \/>\n<em>yourself to the confessor saying &#8216;Bless me,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Father, for I have sinned.&#8217; Make the sign<\/em><br \/>\n<em>of the cross, then mention when you made<\/em><br \/>\n<em>your last confession. Then briefly and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sincerely make your accusation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Then say, &#8216;For these and for all the<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sins of my past life, especially&#8230;. (here name<\/em><br \/>\n<em>some sin which you find easier to feel<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sorry for) I ask pardon of God and of you.&#8217;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Listen attentively to the advice and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the penance and the absolution, the priest<\/em><br \/>\n<em>will give you in the following words:<\/em><br \/>\nGod, the Father of mercies, through<br \/>\nthe death and resurrection of his Son has<br \/>\nreconciled the world to himself and sent<br \/>\nthe Holy Spirit among us for the<br \/>\nforgiveness of sins, through the ministry<br \/>\nof the Church, may God give you pardon<br \/>\nand peace, and I absolve you from your<br \/>\nsins in the name of the Father, and of the<br \/>\nSon, + and of the Holy Spirit.<br \/>\nR: Amen.<br \/>\n<strong><em>The priest may add:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>May the passion of our Lord Jesus<br \/>\nChrist, the intercession of the Blessed<br \/>\nVirgin Mary and of all the saints, whatever<br \/>\ngood you do and suffering you endure,<br \/>\nheal your sins, help you to grow<br \/>\nholiness, and reward you with eternal life.<br \/>\nGo in peace.<br \/>\nR: <strong>Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Prayer after Confession<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><em>First of all, say your penance, then make<\/em><br \/>\n<em>your thanksgiving.<\/em><br \/>\nHow good you have been to me, O<br \/>\nLord! Instead of punishing me, you have<br \/>\nshown me infinite mercy.
