Days of Fast and Abstinence
Fast and abstinence are binding
throughout the Church on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday only. Abstinence or some
other form of self-denial is recommended
on all the Fridays of the year. The forms of
self-denial, to be practised in union with
Our Lord’s suffering and death on the Cross,
have been suggested by the Church and
the individual is free to choose from them.
The age at which abstinence becomes
binding is fourteen. The obligation of
fasting is restricted to those who have
completed their eighteenth year, and until
they have begun their sixtieth.
